Hands-on notes on Google Play games

Every game on the board meets the same rulebook

ActionRef is a small Australian desk that installs mobile games from Google Play, plays them properly and writes down what actually happens. Store ratings are quoted exactly as Google Play shows them, and the call at the end is ours alone.

Eight titles, eight different genres, every one checked on its Google Play listing on the date shown.

01 The rulebook

Five checks, applied to every title in the same order

A referee is only useful if the rules do not move between matches. These five checks are run on every game before a single line of the review is written.

  1. 01

    Installed and played, never skimmed

No title reaches the board on the strength of its store page. Each one is installed on an Android handset and played for at least ninety minutes across several sittings.

  2. 02

    Ratings are quoted, not invented

The star figure beside a game is the Google Play score recorded on the day of the check, shown together with the published number of reviews. We never round it or nudge it.

  3. 03

Store details are confirmed, not assumed

Studio name, genre and the date of the last update come from the title's own Google Play listing on the day of the check, and the link in the entry points at that same listing.

  4. 04

    Interruptions are timed

Advertising breaks, forced waits and pop-ups are noted as they are met during play, because that is the part of a mobile game most readers ask about first.

  5. 05

    Advertising is labelled, never rated

Commercial placements are marked as such and are kept away from the editorial call. A placement can occupy space on the page; it cannot move a rating.

Every session ends with the same paper checklist before anything is published.

02 The catalogue

Eight titles, one entry each

Entries are ordered by the date they were checked, not by rating. Screens come from the Google Play listing of the same title, so what you see is the game named in the entry.

Solitaire card game

Fairway Solitaire - Card Game

A golf-flavoured take on card solitaire: you clear a hole by taking cards that sit one rank above or below the card in play, chaining as far as the layout allows. Courses are grouped into holes with their own layouts and par targets, and boosters help when a run stalls.

The presentation is friendly and slightly cartoonish, with a gopher mascot needling you between holes. Rounds are short, and the desk met occasional advertising breaks between courses.

Referee's call The chaining rule turns a familiar card layout into something you plan two moves ahead. Best in short sittings.

Word search puzzle

Word Search 2 - Hidden Words

Grids of letters, a themed list to find, and a finger swipe in any direction — including backwards and on the diagonal. Levels are grouped by topic, so a session moves through food, nature or music instead of random vocabulary.

Puzzles are short enough for a tram stop and can be played without a connection. The desk met occasional advertising between levels, skippable after a few seconds.

Referee's call The highest store score on our board, and the tidiest grid handling of the three word titles we tried this month.

03

Mountain Bike Xtreme app icon

Bike riding

Mountain Bike Xtreme

A side-on riding game built around physics rather than speed: two controls for lean and throttle, and a trail that punishes a careless landing. Silhouette artwork against layered hills keeps the screen readable on a small handset.

A day-and-night cycle and changing weather alter how a familiar trail reads, and new bikes unlock as you clear tracks. The desk logged advertising breaks between attempts.

Referee's call A middling store score is a fair one — the controls take a session to settle — but the trail design is genuinely good.

4.2

04

Idle Bus Station - Tycoon Game app icon

Bus station tycoon

Idle Bus Station - Tycoon Game

An idle management sim about a coach terminal: add platforms, put staff where the queues build, open new destinations and upgrade the waiting hall. Passengers keep arriving while the app is closed, so a session usually starts with a tidy-up.

Progress is steady rather than demanding, and the isometric station stays legible as it grows. Advertising breaks are optional and can be watched to speed a step along.

Referee's call An honest idle sim for short check-ins. Read the upgrade panel once and the whole loop makes sense.

05

hocus. app icon

Physics puzzle

hocus.

A minimalist puzzle built on impossible geometry in the manner of an Escher drawing. You slide a small red cube along grey structures whose corners only connect from the angle you are looking at, and the goal is the marked tile.

There is no timer, no score chase and almost no interface — just a level, a cube and a lot of quiet re-reading of the shape. Hundreds of levels ship with the app.

Referee's call The calmest title on the board and the one most likely to stay installed after the review is filed.

Sudoku

Sudoku without ads

Classic nine-by-nine sudoku with four difficulty steps, pencil notes, undo, a mistake counter and a timer. The grid fills the screen, the number pad sits under the thumb, and nothing else asks for attention.

Puzzles run offline and the title keeps the promise in its name: the desk logged no advertising breaks across a full session of play.

Referee's call The plainest entry here, and the reason it scores so well. Choose it if interruptions are what put you off most puzzle apps.

3.5

07

Rail Master Tycoon: Idle Train app icon

Train tycoon

Rail Master Tycoon: Idle Train

An idle railway builder: connect towns with track, upgrade locomotives and wagons, and keep freight and passengers moving while the map opens into new regions. Deliveries continue while the app is shut, so returning players find a queue waiting.

The hand-drawn map is the strongest part of the presentation, and each region adds a fresh delivery puzzle. Advertising breaks are voluntary, watched only when you choose to hurry a delivery along.

Referee's call Deeper than most idle titles of its size — the route planning genuinely rewards a tidy network.

Escape-room puzzle

Escape Room Parallel Mystery

A point-and-click puzzle series set in themed chambers. You sweep each scene for objects, combine what you collect, and work out the order a mechanism expects before the door opens onto the next room.

Puzzle chains are logical rather than obscure, and hints are available when a room stalls. Advertising appears between chapters rather than inside a puzzle.

Referee's call Solid room design with the odd fiddly tap target. Play it on the largest screen you own.

03 Genres on the board

Eight genres, and what the desk checks in each

One title per genre keeps the board honest: nothing is included twice because it happens to be popular, and every entry has to justify its own row.

04 Referee's picks

Three calls for three kinds of spare time

Picks are decided at the desk after the reviews are filed. They answer the question we are asked most often: which of these should I install first?

  • For a five-minute break

Word Search 2 - Hidden Words app icon on the picks shortlist

Word Search 2 - Hidden Words

    Google Play 4.9 / 5 · 51.6K reviews

A grid can be started and finished between two stops. Themed lists keep the vocabulary interesting, and the puzzles work with the connection off.

  • For a long sit-down

Rail Master Tycoon: Idle Train app icon on the picks shortlist

    Rail Master Tycoon: Idle Train

    Google Play 3.5 / 5 · 4.4K reviews

Planning a network across regions takes real sessions. The map rewards patience, and progress carries on between visits.

  • For readers who hate interruptions

Sudoku without ads app icon on the picks shortlist

    Sudoku without ads

    Google Play 4.8 / 5 · 6.2K reviews

A full grid, four difficulty steps and no breaks in play during our session. The plainest interface on the board, deliberately so.

08 About the desk

A small desk with a narrow job

ActionRef covers mobile games published on Google Play in Australia. We are independent of Google and of every studio on this board, and we keep the coverage to peaceful genres that suit a phone.

  • Played, then written

Reviews start on a handset, not on a press release. If a title cannot hold ninety minutes of play, that goes in the entry.

  • One rulebook for all

A studio with a large following gets the same five checks as one with a few thousand installs, in the same order.

  • Nothing hidden

Advertising placements are labelled, the editorial process is written out in plain words, and store figures are quoted with their source.

  • Peaceful genres only

Puzzles, cards, riding and management sims. Titles that trade on distress or chance are outside what this desk covers.

One handset, one notebook, and the same checklist for every title.

09 Editorial model

How this site works, in plain words

What we do

We publish independent reviews of mobile games from Google Play, with the aim of helping readers find worthwhile titles from smaller studios that rarely reach the top of a chart.

How titles are chosen

One title per genre, shortlisted from Google Play in peaceful categories: puzzles, cards, riding and management sims. A large following on its own does not put a game on the board.

Who writes, and how often

The same Australian desk writes every entry from its own play notes. The board is reviewed monthly, and each addition or re-check is logged with its date in the new entries section.

Where the line sits

The referee's call is the opinion of the desk, not a measurement. Advertising placements are labelled where they appear and never change a rating, a call or the order of the catalogue. The full statement is in our terms.

10 New entries

Most recent changes to the board

Every addition and re-check is logged here with the date it was filed, so you can see how current an entry is before you act on it.
